Marquis Treats Horses With Epm
Marquis antiprotozoal oral paste is a medication designed
by Bayer Animal Health to treat horses that have been diagnosed
with Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis, known as EPM for short.
This is a truly difficult disease that can be very frustrating
to deal with for veterinarians and horse owners alike. It is
a parasite disease that affects the spinal cord, nervous system
and brain of a horse. It begins to appear first as a slight
lack of coordination or clumsiness, but it can quickly make
a horse so unstable that it is unable to get up. Marquis is
prescribed by vets as a way to treat this condition and it is
the best known product of its type for this purpose.
A syringe of Marquis generally lasts for 7 days and because
it is a paste, it is inserted via the syringe into the horse's
mouth. Usually, your vet will recommend that you give your horse
Marquis once per day for 28 days. It is important that your
vet diagnose your horse as having EPM before you begin giving
this treatment because EPM can mimic many other neurological
conditions and you want to be certain that you are treating
your horse appropriately.
The active ingredient in Marquis is called ponazuril and it
acts against the parasites called S. neurona that cause EPM
by crossing the blood-brain barrier to kill the parasite where
it resides.
Early diagnosis is essential for this disease to be caught
and treated quickly in order to get the best results for your
horse's health. It is important not to ignore signs of clumsiness
or leaning that can often indicate the presence of the parasites
or other neurological conditions that your vet should have a
look at. Because Bayer is a highly trusted name in vet medicine,
you can know that Marquis has a high safety rating.
